Vocabulary: An aggregate or range of things, qualities, or techniques that form the basis of a means of expression, especially in the arts: a painter with a rich vocabulary of colors.
This new piece was created with the fabric that I rusted several months ago. I was just playing around to see what if...
I was in the middle of creating the piece for the 'pathways' challenge in my guild when I grabbed some of the rusted fabric and started mixing them up and adding some paint to some of the pieces.
You can see the original post with many of the rusted pieces here. This is actually the piece of rusted white cotton velvet and the rusted commercial printed cotton that I used in the final piece.
I used some black paint to create some circles on the printed cotton piece to coordinate with the rusted circles on the velvet piece. I created a collage with the velvet in the center and I also used some dyed silks that were in similar colors as the rusted pieces. I also threw in some gold tissue paper as well to see if it would work. Once I had my collage like I wanted it, I fused it all down on a piece of felt then placed a piece of burgundy polyester chiffon over the entire piece. I free motioned outlining the rusted shapes and the dyed silks then burned a few holes in the chiffon with a heat gun. The bright white of the velvet was a little too stark so I then used some watered down quinacridone azo gold acrylic paint to dab around the burned chiffon and I liked it so much I added a bit more here and there.
I found 3 rusted & flattened bottle caps and 2 rusted metal washers to sew on top of the finished piece.
It is edged in a rusty colored chiffon ribbon.
The burgundy chiffon really changed the colors of the rusted fabrics as well as the dyed silks.
Here's a closer shot.
kreinik metallic thread. Hopefully it holds up!
Was initially going to call this piece the language of rust because of the words printed on the commercial cotton and because of the way the rust reacted with the fabrics. But then I realized that 'vocabulary' was a much better word for it. The rust was 'expressing itself onto the fabric', imbuing it with colors and patterns
As soon as I photograph the 'pathways' piece I will post that.
Until then-live your life creatively~
